Beloved, 

We are all commanded to PRAY WITHOUT CEASING. We are living in the last days and we are all in need of each other's prayers. We receive many requests from people who want to understand the meaning of spiritual warfare and others who want to learn how to become mighty prayer warriors for God. There are many ministries that claim to be "experts" in spiritual warfare, but the truth is that spiritual warfare is simple to understand and you should never have to pay anyone to be taught about this subject. Spiritual warfare is not something you do but it is a lifestyle you choose. The only way to be a successful prayer warrior is to accept Jesus Christ as your LORD and Savior, receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, pray the Word of God by faith believing, in the full armor of God, with the power of the Holy Ghost, in the Name of Jesus, with the power of the Blood of Jesus, using the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. You must know the Word of God in order to discern the wiles of the devil, and you must be led by the Holy Spirit to pray effectively. Satan is the enemy of your soul that only comes to kill, steal and destroy, therefore, this is not a game but life and death. To be an effective prayer warrior, you must KNOW THE WORD OF GOD, discern the enemy, expose the enemy, and cast the enemy out. The enemy is out to destroy you and he will use everything and everyone he can to try to destroy your testimony, your life, your destiny, your ministry and your loved ones. Satan knows that his time is short so he is working diligently to steal your peace and your joy. The joy of the LORD is your strength. You must be filled with the power of the Holy Ghost, and watch and pray always. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING. 

All followers of Christ are called to fight the good fight of faith and to fight the spiritual battles against evil which assaults each of us daily. Prayer is the most important work in the life of the believer. Prayer warriors pray without ceasing, and are not ignorant of Satan's devices. Prayer Warriors understand that the only way to resist the devil and make him flee is to use the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Remember how Jesus withstood the devil in the wilderness? He answered every temptation with these words: IT IS WRITTEN..... Satan has been around a long time and he twists the Scriptures in an attempt to deceive even the very elect, but the child of God should know the truth of the Scriptures well enough to know the the difference between the truth and lies. Believers should have discernment to know when they hear lies and half truths. All believers are in this war of good vs. evil whether they wish to be or not. You must engage in this war actively and not passively, because the battles are real and they are ultimately for the souls of mankind. Satan and his demons are out to kill, steal and destroy you, your loved ones and everything they can. Each prayer warrior must put their faith, hope, trust and confidence in God and put on the full armor of God. You must never take your armor off or put your guard down. You must guard your heart and your mind always. We must daily go boldly before God's throne of grace and mercy and pray for one another. God has given us all that we need to fight victoriously in prayer. He has given us the power of the Holy Ghost, and the authority of the name of Jesus to conquer every assignment of hell coming against us. Satan doesn't mess with those who already belong to him, but he is waging war against those who are in Christ Jesus, and one of his greatest tactics is the wearing down of the saints of the most High. We must proclaim His Word and stand on His promises; pray about everything and pray for everyone. We must cover ourselves and our loved ones with the Blood of Jesus every single day. God's power is at work in you as you worship Him, declare His Word, and do spiritual warfare - PRAY IN JESUS' NAME. Bind and cast out every evil thing that the enemy sends your way. God gives His children the gift of discernment so that you know how to identify the evil that is coming against you. Your prayers can literally prevent evil attacks and move the hand of God to bring blessings into the lives of everyone you pray for. GOD ANSWERS EVERY PRAYER. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Always listen for the Holy Ghost's still small voice and promptings for guidance in prayer. He will put burdens on your heart for people and situations to pray over. The Holy Ghost is always interceding for you, through you and with you, and Jesus Christ is at the right hand of the Father always interceding on your behalf. His mighty warring angels are dispatched as you pray, to guard, protect, defend, minister to and war on your behalf. How wonderful to know that we are on Heaven's Prayer List and our Savior Himself is praying to our Heavenly Father on our behalf. By the way, God cares about every detail of your life, and He is in complete control. 

Our Commander is Jesus Christ, and He leads the armies of heaven. Jesus is the Commander of every prayer warrior. God has chosen, anointed and appointed you for such a time as this, to do spiritual warfare, and greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world. Satan is the accuser of the brethren, the tormentor, the adversary, and the deceiver, who tries to cause you to doubt God and doubt His promises. He will do everything he can to try to cause you to doubt God and believe his lies because he wants to steal your peace and your joy. The joy of the LORD is your strength. You must guard your heart and your mind always, and plead the Blood of Jesus over your spirit, soul, mind, body, thoughts, will, emotions, feelings, psyche, intellect and over every fiber of your being, and over your loved ones. You have full authority to pray in the name of Jesus Christ and God answers every single prayer. He may be three days late, but He is always right on time, and nothing is impossible for our Great and Mighty God. You must believe, doubting nothing. Faith is the victory, but without faith it is impossible to please God. You have been chosen by God to be a soldier in the Army of the LORD and to lead others into victory. You must lead every soul you meet to LORD Jesus, and tell them that they must have their own personal relationship with Him. We all need each others prayers desperately in these last days. You must always invite God's presence into your life and you do that by praise and worship. God inhabits the praises of His saints. Praise and worship is very powerful spiritual warfare. Never forget that God is in control of every circumstance and He rules the universe.  Satan is like a dog on a short leash, whose teeth have been knocked out. He barks lies and threats against you, but he can only do what God allows him to. Remember Job. Satan had to get God's permission to attack Job, but God set the parameters and told Satan what he could do and what he couldn't do. God created Satan and soon God will cast him into the lake of fire and brimstone, with the beast and the false prophet, where they will be tormented day and night forever.

God is in charge of everything. When you pray, be very specific. God already knows what you need before you ask, but you are still commanded to ask, seek and knock. You must trust God for manna for the day and not worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow is promised to none of us. You must take everything to God and surrender all to Him. You can trust Him to keep His promises, knowing that He is working ALL things out for your good. What Satan means for evil, God always turns it around for your good. Resist Satan and he will flee. Surrender daily your will, your thoughts, your dreams, your hopes, your desires, your agenda, your plans, your wishes and your life to God. You must reject, oppose and cast out the evil spirits of pride, fear, doubt, worry, stress, anxiety, and be still and know that God is God. Nothing is too hard for our God. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise, and be content with what God has given you. Seasons change and God can take you from the pit to the palace in a day, like He did for Joseph. You must stay in the Word, stand on the Word and trust in God alone. Do not put your trust in man for that brings a curse. Stay in the Word, worship God daily, and do warfare - PRAY WITHOUT CEASING. Never put your guard down or take anything for granted. Remember that Satan can appear as an angel of light. Anything that appears too good to be true usually is. Cry out for discernment. Surround yourself with other prayer warriors and encourage and edify each other with God's promises as your intercede for others. 

It is written in Psalms 100:4-Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. WORSHIP GOD AND GET YOUR PRAISE ON. It is written in Psalms 1.1-3: Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD DAY AND NIGHT, BELIEVE AND STAND ON GOD'S PROMISES, DECLARE AND DECREE HIS WORD OUT LOUD AND LET EVERY DEMON FROM HELL KNOW THAT YOUR HOPE, FAITH AND TRUST ARE IN GOD ALONE. It is written in 2 Corinthians 10.3-6: For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. PRAY THE WORD OF GOD, IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY GHOST, IN THE NAME OF JESUS, WITH THE BLOOD OF JESUS. This is one of the reasons WORSHIP-WORD-WARFARE was birthed by the Holy Ghost--- to equip the Body of Christ to be mighty prayer warriors, to teach Biblical Spiritual Warfare, and to encourage you to READ THE WORD OF GOD for yourself. If you don't know how to pray for yourself, how can you pray for others? The whole world desperately needs your prayers! 

Below you will find some wonderful sermons about spiritual warfare, putting on the full armor of God, how to cast down strongholds and how to overcome evil. These videos were carefully chosen because they are Biblically accurate and these are teachings from highly respected mighty prayer warriors, champions of our faith. I also posted many Bible verses on the subject of prayer. It is my conviction that prayer is the most important work that you can do. You must meditate in the Word of God day and night and rightly divide the Word of Truth. I highly recommend that you read the Bible OUT LOUD. This way you are allowing the Word of God to penetrate your spirit. Reading Scripture OUT LOUD also helps you to memorize God's promises. Another reason I believe it is important to read the Scriptures OUT LOUD is to let every demon from hell know that you are awake, you have taken your place as a follower of Christ, that you are trusting in God and standing on His Word and that you are serious about becoming a mighty prayer warrior. We are warned to wage war against the sin in ourselves and to oppose every plot, plan and scheme of the devil. (Romans 6, Ephesians 6). My personal favorite audio teaching about warfare prayer is PRAYERS THAT ROUT DEMONS by Apostle John Eckhardt. When intercessors volunteer to become prayer warriors for our ministry, I always ask them pray along with this video as often as they can for sixty days. Every single intercessor has learned much and been strengthened  by these prayers, and have been encouraged to dive deeper into the Word of God. This is a powerful and anointed teaching on prayer and it is truly a gift to the Body of Christ. People ask me all the time why I do not have any videos of my own, and that is because I was permanently banned and censored from Youtube and every other social media platform before I ever even thought of making my first video, but I will not be silenced. I will do whatever I can to get the gospel out. 

It is written in Ephesians 6.10-20: Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. Remember, there is power in the Blood of Jesus, the Name of Jesus and the Word of God. You cannot stand strong in God's  power without putting on the full armor that He has already provided. The battle is not yours but belongs to God and it is He that fights for you. But, you must take your place, put on the armor, stand on His every promise, and fight the good fight of faith, and war against evil princes, principalities, and rulers of wickedness in high places. Christ Jesus has already given you the victory, but you must put all your faith and trust in God and do your part, by standing on and declaring and decreeing God's Word. God's Word is truth and it is His Truth, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that you must believe, speak, declare and stand on. You must speak the Word OUT LOUD, fast and pray, and pray without ceasing. 

Remember when Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness? (Matthew 4) Jesus answered every temptation with: IT IS WRITTEN! Satan knows the Word of God, but he twists it and lies. You must KNOW what God's Word says so that you will not be deceived by the many wolves in sheep's clothing. You must pray in the power of the Holy Ghost, and always pray according to God's will, not your own. You must surrender your will, your plans, your desires, your wishes, and your burdens and exchange them for God's will, His plans, His desires, His wishes and His burdens. Do not doubt but trust God's Word and His promises no matter what comes against you, and you will always have the victory in every area of your life. You must hide God's Word in your heart so that you will not sin against Him. (Psalms 119.11). 

Remember the sons of Sceva who tried to cast demons out in their own power and authority, but came home naked and bloody? We are not to speak to the devil, but to God, and ask God to rebuke the devil, cast demons out, heal the sick, raise the dead and cleanse the lepers. The only way to be successful in spiritual warfare is to pray in Jesus' Name, in the power of the Holy Ghost, submit to God, resist the devil, rely on God's power, stand on God's promises, and put on the whole armor of God. The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much. The first thing you must put on is the righteousness of God by Christ Jesus, for without salvation, you have no weapon and you will be defeated. Seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added. God is your Savior, deliverer, healer, protector, defender, fortress, rock, refuge, strength, and a very present help in time of trouble. In the Army of God, the LORD JESUS CHRIST is your Commanding Officer, the HOLY BIBLE is your Code of Conduct, the whole Armor of God and Prayer are your weapons, the God of Angel Armies is coaching you, the great cloud of witnesses is cheering you on, God's Mighty Angels are warring on your behalf, the Holy Ghost is interceding on your behalf and JESUS has already won the victory. STAND STILL AND SEE THE SALVATION OF THE LORD!

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL WARFARE?  

There are two primary errors when it comes to spiritual warfare—over-emphasis and under-emphasis. Some blame every sin, every conflict, and every problem on demons that need to be cast out. Others completely ignore the spiritual realm and the fact that the Bible tells us our battle is against spiritual powers. The key to successful spiritual warfare is finding the biblical balance. Jesus sometimes cast demons out of people; other times He healed people with no mention of the demonic. The apostle Paul instructs Christians to wage war against the sin in themselves (Romans 6) and warns us to oppose the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:10–18).  

 Ephesians 6:10–12 says, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” This text teaches some crucial truths: we can only stand strong in the Lord’s power, it is God’s armor that protects us, and our battle is ultimately against spiritual forces of evil in the world. 

Ephesians 6:13–18 is a description of the spiritual armor God gives us. We are to stand firm with the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit, and by praying in the Spirit. What do these pieces of spiritual armor represent in spiritual warfare? We are to know the truth, believe the truth, and speak the truth. We are to rest in the fact that we are declared righteous because of Christ’s sacrifice for us. We are to proclaim the gospel no matter how much resistance we face. We are not to waver in our faith, trusting God’s promises no matter how strongly we are attacked. Our ultimate defense is the assurance we have of our salvation, an assurance that no spiritual force can take away. Our offensive weapon is the Word of God, not our own opinions and feelings. And we are to pray in the power and will of the Holy Spirit. 

Jesus is our ultimate example of resisting temptation in spiritual warfare. Observe how Jesus handled direct attacks from Satan when He was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1–11). Each temptation was combatted with the words “it is written.” The Word of the living God is the most powerful weapon against the temptations of the devil. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11). 

A word of caution concerning spiritual warfare is in order. The name of Jesus is not a magic incantation that causes demons to flee from before us. The seven sons of Sceva are an example of what can happen when people presume an authority they have not been given (Acts 19:13–16). Even Michael the archangel did not rebuke Satan in his own power but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” (Jude 1:9). When we start talking to the devil, we run the risk of being led astray as Eve was (Genesis 3:1–7). Our focus should be on God, not demons; we speak to Him, not them. 

In summary, what are the keys to success in spiritual warfare? We rely on God’s power, not our own. We put on the whole armor of God. We draw on the power of Scripture—the Word of God is the Spirit’s sword. We pray in perseverance and holiness, making our appeal to God. We stand firm (Ephesians 6:13–14); we submit to God; we resist the devil’s work (James 4:7), knowing that the Lord of hosts is our protector. “Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken” (Psalm 62:2). 

 

 

​HOW CAN I BECOME A PRAYER WARRIOR?  

​Although the phrase “prayer warrior” is not found in Scripture, a prayer warrior is generally thought of as a Christian who prays continually and effectively for others in the manner of praying taught in Scripture. Therefore, prayer warriors pray to Father God (Matthew 6:9) in the power of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 3:16; Jude 1:20) and in the name of Jesus (John 14:13). To be a warrior in prayer is to engage in the spiritual battle and fight the good fight of faith wearing the full armor of God and “pray[ing] in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests” (Ephesians 6:10-18). 

While all Christians are to be prayer warriors, there are some people who feel they have a special and unique ability to pray and have been called by God to pray as their special ministry. The Bible never specifies certain people who are to pray more often, more diligently, or more effectively than other Christians, but there are diligent pray-ers who are known for their emphasis on prayer. Paul commands that “requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone” (1 Timothy 2:1), and he says nothing that would indicate some people are exempt from doing so. All believers in Christ have the Holy Spirit who helps us communicate our prayer requests (Romans 8:26-27). All believers are to be praying in the name of Jesus, which means that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, that we trust in Him for everything, including His interceding with the Father for us in all things, and that we live and pray in accordance with God’s will. Praying in Jesus’ name does not mean merely adding “in Jesus’ name” to a prayer. Rather, it means praying in submission to His will. 

As prayer warriors, we rejoice in all things and have a spirit of thankfulness for what God is doing in our lives and the lives of others, and our own spirits grow day by day as we come to realize the magnitude of our blessings. We know with certainty that God provided the breath we just took (Isaiah 42:5); that He has forgiven our past, present and future sins (1 John 2:12); that He loves us with an eternal love (Ephesians 2:4-7); and that we have a place in heaven with our Lord (1 Peter 1:3-5). Our hearts, then, are filled with joy and peace and overflow with love for God, and we want others to have this same love, joy and peace. Therefore, we work for them by praying. 

Effective prayer is indeed work. We have to learn to walk with God, so we meditate daily on Him and His ways in order to become more and more humble, which is essential for effective prayer (2 Chronicles 7:13-15). We also study Scripture thoughtfully every day to learn what is pleasing to God and therefore what constitutes acceptable prayer. We learn to eliminate hindrances to prayer (Mark 11:25; 1 Peter 3:7; 1 John 3:21-22) and not to grieve the Spirit of God (Ephesians 4:30-32). We learn that we are in a spiritual battle with Satan, so we must pray for our own spiritual well-being to maintain our strength and focus in praying for others (Ephesians 6:12-18). 

Prayer warriors have a heart for God, a heart for prayer, a heart for people, and a heart for Christ’s church. Therefore, we pray continually and trust that God answers each prayer according to His perfect will and in His perfect timing.  

 

 

WHAT IS THE KEY TO EFFECTIVE PRAYER?

​We all want our prayers to be “effective,” so much so that when we focus on the “results” of our prayers, we lose sight of the incredible privilege we have in prayer. That people like us can speak to the Creator of the universe is itself an amazing thing. Even more astounding is the fact that He hears us and acts on our behalf! The first thing we need to understand about effective prayer is that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ had to suffer and die on the cross to even make it possible for us to approach the throne of grace to worship and pray (Hebrews 10:19-25). 

Although the Bible offers a great deal of guidance on how we can deepen our communication with the Creator, effective prayer has more to do with the one doing the praying than it does with “how” we are to pray. Indeed, Scripture says, “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective” (James 5:16), and that the “eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer” (1 Peter 3:12; Psalm 34:15), and, again, “the prayer of the upright pleases Him” (Proverbs 15:8). Prayer saved the righteous Daniel from the lion’s den (Daniel 6:11), and in the wilderness, God’s chosen people benefitted from Moses’ right standing with God (Exodus 16–17). The barren Hannah’s steadfast and humble prayers resulted in the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 1:20), and the apostle Paul’s prayers even caused the earth to shake (Acts 16:25-26). Clearly, the passionate prayers of God’s righteous children can accomplish much (Numbers 11:2). 

We need to make sure that our prayers are in line with God’s will. “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, he hears us” (1 John 5:14-15). Praying in accordance with God’s will is essentially praying in accord with what He would want, and we can see God’s revealed will throughout Scripture. And if we do not know what to pray for, Paul reminds us that as God’s children we can rely on the Holy Spirit to intercede for us, as “the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will” (Romans 8:27). And since the Spirit of God knows the mind of God, the Spirit’s prayer is always in keeping with the will of the Father. 

Additionally, prayer is something believers should do “continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). In Luke 18:1, for example, we are told to pray with persistence and “not give up.” Also, when we present our requests to God, we are to pray with faith (James 1:5; Mark 11:22-24), with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6), with a spirit of forgiveness toward others (Mark 11:25), in Christ’s name (John 14:13-14), and as stated above, with a heart that is right with God (James 5:16). It’s the strength of our faith, not the length of our prayers that pleases Him to whom we pray, so we don’t need to impress God with our eloquence or intelligence. After all, God knows what our needs are even before we ask (Matthew 6:8). 

Also, we should make sure we have no unconfessed sin in our hearts when we pray, as this would certainly be an impediment to effective prayer. “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2; cf. Psalm 66:18). Fortunately, “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). 

Another barrier to effective communication with God is praying with selfish desires and wrong motives. “When you ask you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures” (James 4:3). Rejecting God’s call or ignoring His advice (Proverbs 1:24-28), worshiping idols (Jeremiah 11:11-14), or turning a deaf ear to the cry of the poor (Proverbs 21:13) serve as additional obstacles to an effective prayer life. 

Effective prayer is a way to strengthen our relationship with our Father in heaven. When we study and obey His Word and seek to please Him, the same God who made the sun stand still upon the prayer of Joshua (Joshua 10:12-13) invites us to come boldly before the throne of grace and pray with confidence that He will extend His mercy and grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16). 

 

 

WHAT ARE HINDRANCES TO PRAYER? 

The most obvious hindrance to a potent prayer life is the presence of unconfessed sins in the heart of the one who is praying. Because our God is holy, there is a barrier that exists between Him and us when we come to Him with unconfessed sin in our lives. “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2). David concurred, knowing from experience that God is far from those who try to hide their sin: “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened” (Psalm 66:18). 

The Bible refers to several areas of sin that are hindrances to effective prayer. First, when we are living according to the flesh, rather than in the Spirit, our desire to pray and our ability to effectively communicate with God are hindered. Although we receive a new nature when we are born again, that new nature still resides in our old flesh, and that old “tent” is corrupt and sinful. The flesh can gain control of our actions, attitudes, and motives unless we are diligent to “put to death the deeds of the body” (Romans 8:13) and be led by the Spirit in a right relationship with God. Only then will we be able to pray in close communion with Him. 

One way living in the flesh manifests itself is in selfishness, another hindrance to effective prayer. When our prayers are selfishly motivated, when we ask God for what we want rather than for what He wants, our motives hinder our prayers. “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (1 John 5:14). Asking according to God’s will is the same as asking in submission to whatever His will may be, whether or not we know what that will is. As in all things, Jesus is to be our example in prayer. He always prayed in the will of His Father: “Yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). Selfish prayers are always those that are intended to gratify our own selfish desires, and we should not expect God to respond to such prayers. “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures” (James 4:3). 

Living according to selfish, fleshly desires will also hinder our prayers because it produces a hardness of heart toward others. If we are indifferent to the needs of others, we can expect God to be indifferent to our needs. When we go to God in prayer, our first concern should be His will. The second should be the needs of others. This stems from the understanding that we are to consider others better than ourselves and be concerned about their interests over and above our own (Philippians 2:3-4). 

A major hindrance to effective prayer is a spirit of unforgiveness toward others. When we refuse to forgive others, a root of bitterness grows up in our hearts and chokes our prayers. How can we expect God to pour out His blessings upon us undeserving sinners if we harbor hatred and bitterness toward others? This principle is beautifully illustrated in the parable of the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18:23-35. This story teaches that God has forgiven us a debt that is beyond measure (our sin), and He expects us to forgive others as we have been forgiven. To refuse to do so will hinder our prayers. 

Another major hindrance to effective prayer is unbelief and doubt. This does not mean, as some suggest, that because we come to God convinced that He will grant our requests, He is somehow obligated to do so. Praying without doubt means praying in the secure belief and understanding of God’s character, nature, and motives. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). When we come to God in prayer, doubting His character, purpose, and promises, we insult Him terribly. Our confidence must be in His ability to grant any request that is in accordance with His will and purpose for our lives. We must pray with the understanding that whatever He purposes is the best possible scenario. “But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does” (James 1:6-7). 

Finally, discord in the home is a definite obstacle to prayer. Peter specifically mentions this as a hindrance to the prayers of a husband whose attitude toward his wife is less than godly. “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers” (1 Peter 3:7). Where there is a serious conflict in family relationships and the head of the household is not demonstrating the attitudes Peter mentions, the husband’s prayer communication with God is hindered. Likewise, wives are to follow the biblical principles of submission to their husbands’ headship if their own prayers are not to be hindered (Ephesians 5:22-24). 

Fortunately, all these prayer hindrances can be dealt with at once by coming to God in prayers of confession and repentance. We are assured in 1 John 1:9 that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Once we have done that, we enjoy a clear and open channel of communication with God, and our prayers will not only be heard and answered, but we will also be filled with a deep sense of joy. 

 

 

WHAT ARE SOME CONDITIONS TO ANSWERED PRAYER? 

Some people would like prayer with no conditions. They wish God to be a celestial genie who, when summoned by prayer, must grant any request they make. They find a measure of encouragement in the fable of Aladdin and his lamp, aspiring to that level of control over God’s power in their prayer life. But the biblical fact is that prayer has conditions. It’s true that Jesus said, “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer” (Matthew 21:22). But, even in that statement, we have one condition to prayer: faith. As we examine the Bible, we find that there are other conditions to prayer, as well. 

Here are ten biblical instructions concerning prayer that imply conditions to prayer: 

1) Pray to the Heavenly Father (see Matthew 6:9). This condition to prayer might seem obvious, but it’s important. We don’t pray to false gods, to ourselves, to angels, to Buddha, or to the Virgin Mary. We pray to the God of the Bible, who revealed Himself in Jesus Christ and whose Spirit indwells us. Coming to Him as our “Father” implies that we are first His children—made so by faith in Christ (see John 1:12). 

2) Pray for good things (see Matthew 7:11). We don’t always understand or recognize what is good, but God knows, and He is eager to give His children what is best for them. Paul prayed three times to be healed of an affliction, and each time God said, “No.” Why would a loving God refuse to heal Paul? Because God had something better for him, namely, a life lived by grace. Paul stopped praying for healing and began to rejoice in his weakness (2 Corinthians 12:7–10). 

3) Pray for needful things (see Philippians 4:19). Placing a priority on God’s kingdom is one of the conditions to prayer (Matthew 6:33). The promise is that God will supply all our needs, not all our wants. There is a difference. 

4) Pray from a righteous heart (see James 5:16). The Bible speaks of having a clean conscience as a condition to answered prayer (Hebrews 10:22). It is important that we keep our sins confessed to the Lord. “If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear” (Psalm 66:18, NAS). 

5) Pray from a grateful heart (see Philippians 4:6). Part of prayer is an attitude of thanksgiving. 

6) Pray according to the will of God (see 1 John 5:14). An important condition to prayer is that it is prayed within the will of God. Jesus prayed this way all the time, even in Gethsemane: “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). We can pray all we want, with great sincerity and faith, for XYZ, but, if God’s will is ABC, we pray amiss. 

7) Pray in the authority of Jesus Christ (see John 16:24). Jesus is the reason we are able to approach the throne of grace (Hebrews 10:19–22), and He is our mediator (1 Timothy 2:5). A condition to prayer is that we pray in His name. 

8) Pray persistently (see Luke 18:1). In fact, pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). One of the conditions to effective prayer is that we don’t give up. 

9) Pray unselfishly (see James 4:3). Our motives are important. 

10) Pray in faith (see James 1:6). Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6), who alone can do the impossible (Luke 1:37). Without faith, why pray? 

Joshua’s prayer for the sun to stand still, as audacious as that request was, met all these conditions of prayer (Joshua 10:12–14). Elijah’s prayer for rain to be withheld—and his later prayer that rain would fall—met all of these conditions (James 5:17–18). Jesus’ prayer as He stood before the tomb of Lazarus met all of these conditions (John 11:41). They all prayed to God, according to His will, for good and necessary things, in faith. 

The examples of Joshua, Elijah, and Jesus teach us that, when our prayers line up with God’s sovereign will, wonderful things will happen. There’s no need to be abashed by mountains, for they can move (Mark 11:23). The struggle we face is in getting our prayers lined up with God’s will, having our desires match His. Congruency between God’s will and our own is the goal. We want exactly what He wants; nothing more, nothing less. And we don’t want anything that He doesn’t want. 

Godly, effective prayer has conditions, and God invites us to pray. When can we pray big? When we believe God wants something big. When can we pray audaciously? When we believe God wants something audacious. When should we pray? All the time. 

 

 

WHAT IS WARFARE PRAYER? 

Warfare prayer is a prayer technique popular with Charismatic Christian denominations. It focuses on using prayer as a weapon to do battle with the spiritual forces of evil, especially in regard to one’s daily life, habits, and struggles. Almost always, warfare prayer is just what it sounds like: prayers prayed for the purpose of waging war against an unseen, spiritual enemy who is bent on making us unhappy by thwarting our dreams and desires. 

There is no doubt that spiritual warfare is real. Christians have an enemy in Satan and his demons (Ephesians 6:12). Prayer is commanded in the context of putting on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:18). Some things recommended by warfare prayer adherents are useful. That said, some warfare prayer techniques are unbiblical, and believers should take great care not to be led astray by man’s opinion about how to pray versus God’s command. Promoters of warfare prayer often recommend praying prayers written by others—and to pray them repeatedly. 

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave two general guidelines on prayer: pray secretly instead of to be seen by other people and don’t repeat empty phrases (Matthew 6:5–8). Then, He taught His disciples to pray like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:9–13). Finally, Jesus stressed the importance of forgiveness, saying that those who are forgiving will be forgiven (Matthew 6:14–15). 

Warfare prayer commonly encourages a “take control” attitude, where prayer warriors are told to be bold, decisive, and faithful in prayer. There is nothing wrong with praying boldly and faithfully, as long as we remember who is in charge. It’s not us. Common “warfare prayers” include many “I” statements such as “I declare,” “I decree,” “I bind,” “I overrule,” “I smash,” “I rebuke,” etc. The pray-er is the acting agent, and there is a danger of praying “My will be done” rather than “Thy will be done.” 

Some warfare prayers recommend speaking to Satan in direct address. This is not biblical at all. Our prayers are to be directed to God alone. The Bible never tells us to rebuke Satan or to speak to him or his demons in any way. The rebuking of Satan is done by the Lord, not us. “Even the archangel Michael . . . did not himself dare to condemn [Satan] for slander but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’” (Jude 1:9). The biblical instruction is to submit to God and resist the devil (James 4:7), not to demand things of Satan. 

Probably the clearest danger in most “warfare prayer” is the focus on material things. Proponents of warfare prayer are often promoters of “name it, claim it” theology. Many warfare prayers include a “release” of wealth, a “binding” of sickness, or a “decree” of restoration and blessing. Those with enough faith will decree a “sevenfold” blessing upon themselves. They may “plead the blood” or “cover themselves” with the blood of Christ, things the Bible never tells us to plead or do. The New Testament is clear that God is not obligated to give us material wealth or to heal our sickness, no matter how much we demand or decree it, and no matter how much we denounce the devil and his wiles. It is not wrong to pray for blessings, but God knows what will really benefit us, and it might not be a pain-free life or piles of possessions. 

When warfare prayer gurus exhort believers to “command” things to happen in their lives or to aggressively pray for a dream or desire that may or may not be God’s will, this is not faith—it is a recipe for discouragement. Praying in the midst of our spiritual warfare is necessary, but warfare prayer does not mean praying harder, praying more decisively, or assuming authority we do not have. It means praying according to Scripture, trusting in the power of God, and submitting our will to His. 

 

 

HOW DO I IDENTIFY MY SPIRITUAL GIFT? 

There is no magic formula or definitive test that can tell us exactly what our spiritual gifts are. The Holy Spirit distributes the gifts as He determines (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). A common problem for Christians is the temptation to get so caught up in our spiritual gift that we only seek to serve God in the area in which we feel we have been gifted. That is not how the spiritual gifts work. God calls us to obediently serve Him in all things. He will equip us with whatever gift or gifts we need to accomplish the task He has called us to. 

Identifying our spiritual giftedness can be accomplished in various ways. Spiritual gift tests or inventories, while not to be fully relied upon, can definitely help us understand where our gifting might be. Confirmation from others also gives light to our spiritual giftedness. Other people who see us serving the Lord can often identify a spiritual gift in us that we might take for granted or not recognize. Prayer is also important. The one person who knows exactly how we are spiritually gifted is the gift-giver Himself—the Holy Spirit. We can ask God to show us how we are gifted in order to better use our spiritual gifts for His glory. 

Yes, God calls some to be teachers and gives them the gift of teaching. God calls some to be servants and blesses them with the gift of helps. However, specifically knowing our spiritual gift does not excuse us from serving God in areas outside our gifting. Is it beneficial to know what spiritual gift(s) God has given us? Of course it is. Is it wrong to focus so much on spiritual gifts that we miss other opportunities to serve God? Yes. If we are dedicated to being used by God, He will equip us with the spiritual gifts we need.  

 

 

​HOW DOES GOD DISTRIBUTE SPIRITUAL GIFTS?  

 Romans 12:3-8 and 1 Corinthians chapter 12 make it clear that each Christian is given spiritual gifts according to the Lord’s choice. Spiritual gifts are given for the edification of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:7, 14:12). The exact timing of the giving of these gifts is not specifically mentioned. Most assume that spiritual gifts are given at the time of spiritual birth (the moment of salvation). However, there are some verses that may indicate God gives spiritual gifts later as well. Both 1 Timothy 4:14 and 2 Timothy 1:6 refer to a gift that Timothy had received at the time of his ordination “by prophecy.” This likely indicates that one of the elders at Timothy’s ordination spoke about a spiritual gift that Timothy would have to enable his future ministry. 

We are also told in 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 and in 1 Corinthians 14:12-13 that it is God (not us) who chooses the gifts. These passages also indicate that not everyone will have a particular gift. Paul tells the Corinthian believers that if they are going to covet or long after spiritual gifts, they should strive after the more edifying gifts, such as prophesying (speaking forth the word of God for the building up of others). Now, why would Paul tell them to strongly desire the “greater” gifts if they already had been given all they would be given, and there was no further opportunity of gaining these greater gifts? It may lead one to believe that even as Solomon sought wisdom from God in order to be a good ruler over God’s people, so God will grant to us those gifts we need in order to be of greater benefit to His church. 

Having said this, it still remains that these gifts are distributed according to God’s choosing, not our own. If every Corinthian strongly desired a particular gift, such as prophesying, God would not give everyone that gift simply because they strongly desired it. If He did, then who would serve in all of the other functions of the body of Christ? 

There is one thing that is abundantly clear—God’s command is God’s enablement. If God commands us to do something (such as witness, love the unlovely, disciple the nations, etc.), He will enable us to do it. Some may not be as gifted at evangelism as others, but God commands all Christians to witness and disciple (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). We are all called to evangelize whether or not we have the spiritual gift of evangelism. A determined Christian who strives to learn the Word and develop his teaching ability may become a better teacher than one who may have the spiritual gift of teaching, but who neglects the gift. 

Are spiritual gifts given to us when we receive Christ, or are they cultivated through our walk with God? The answer is both. Normally, spiritual gifts are given at salvation, but also need to be cultivated through spiritual growth. Can a desire in your heart be pursued and developed into your spiritual gift? Can you seek after certain spiritual gifts? First Corinthians 12:31 seems to indicate that this is possible: “earnestly desire the best gifts.” You can seek a spiritual gift from God and be zealous after it by seeking to develop that area. At the same time, if it is not God’s will, you will not receive a certain spiritual gift no matter how strongly you seek after it. God is infinitely wise, and He knows through which gifts you will be most productive for His kingdom. 

No matter how much we have been gifted with one gift or another, we are all called upon to develop a number of areas mentioned in the lists of spiritual gifts: to be hospitable, to show acts of mercy, to serve one another, to evangelize, etc. As we seek to serve God out of love for the purpose of building up others for His glory, He will bring glory to His name, grow His church, and reward us (1 Corinthians 3:5-8, 12:31–14:1). God promises that as we make Him our delight, He will give us the desires of our heart (Psalm 37:4-5). This would surely include preparing us to serve Him in a way that will bring us purpose and satisfaction.
